Mondi has expanded its digital printing capabilities for corrugated packaging with the addition of white ink, offering new options for brand visibility and design flexibility. Announced on 17 September 2025, the move makes Mondi one of the first companies to provide this feature in its six-colour digital printing range.
The development responds to rising demand for white digital printing on brown corrugated packaging, where a white underprint allows colours, logos and motifs to achieve stronger contrast comparable to designs on white substrates. This can be particularly important for brand recognition and product visibility at the point of sale.
The technology supports halftone printing, enabling gradients, shading and three-dimensional effects for higher-quality graphics. Unlike flexographic or offset processes, digital printing does not require printing plates or clichés. Designs can therefore be adjusted quickly, with reduced set-up times and faster production.
All inks used, including the new white option, are water-based and certified for primary packaging by Swiss Quality Testing Services (SQTS), an independent laboratory for food safety. Printing can be carried out on both brown and white outer layers as well as on open flutes.
The process allows sequential printing of barcodes, QR codes and EAN codes directly onto packaging, eliminating separate labels and reducing potential scanning errors. It also enables medium and large production runs with variations within a single batch, supporting seasonal or regional campaigns. By producing only the required quantities per design, the approach helps avoid overproduction and associated storage costs.
Applications extend across multiple sectors, including e-commerce, food and beverages, and other fast-moving consumer goods. With the introduction of white digital printing, Mondi has broadened the scope of corrugated packaging design and strengthened its offering in the digital printing market.
