Siegwerk launches mineral oil-free inks for pharma packaging in India

Siegwerk’s latest ink innovation targets safer pharmaceutical packaging practices in line with evolving global standards.

Siegwerk has announced its entry into India’s pharmaceutical packaging sector with the launch of a dedicated range of mineral oil-free inks, a move aimed at enhancing consumer safety and addressing emerging regulatory concerns.

The announcement, made on October 30, 2025, reflects the company’s strategic shift to support the growing demand for safer packaging materials in the pharmaceutical industry. Siegwerk’s new ink systems are free from mineral oil hydrocarbons (MOHs), which are under increased scrutiny globally due to their potential to migrate into packaged products and form mineral oil aromatic hydrocarbons (MOAHs) — substances linked to carcinogenic risks.

Ashish Pradhan, president of Siegwerk Asia, stated that the company’s commitment to safety and sustainability underscores its view that the pharmaceutical industry must adopt a holistic approach—acknowledging the critical role of packaging materials in maintaining product integrity. He added that Siegwerk’s mineral oil-free ink systems offer Indian pharmaceutical brands a safer, compliant alternative that supports consumer protection and aligns with international standards.

Siegwerk’s inks are developed under a stringent raw material introduction system backed by its Global Product Safety framework, offering a level of oversight that the company claims is currently unmatched in India’s ink industry.

While countries in the European Union are beginning to impose stricter controls on MOHs in food and pharma packaging, India lacks formal regulations on printing inks in the pharmaceutical sector. Siegwerk aims to address this gap by raising awareness and supporting higher safety benchmarks.

The development follows the company’s INR 350 crore investment to advance sustainable ink technologies. With rising demand for high-quality, export-compliant pharmaceutical packaging in India, Siegwerk sees long-term potential in the sector.
