Africa’s First W&H ALPHAFLEX Flexo Press Installed at Packaging World

Visitors from across the flexographic printing industry gather at Print & Pack Excellence 2025, witnessing live demonstrations of Africa’s first ALPHAFLEX CI press and engaging in thought leadership sessions on sustainability, automation, and material science.

Packaging World has officially commissioned Africa’s first ALPHAFLEX central impression (CI) flexographic press at its Pinetown facility, signaling a major advancement in the continent’s flexible packaging capabilities. The unveiling took place during Print & Pack Excellence 2025, a two-day industry showcase co-hosted with global press manufacturer Windmöller & Hölscher (W&H).

The ALPHAFLEX—introduced globally at drupa 2024—represents W&H’s latest generation CI flexo press, engineered for high-speed, sustainable, and cost-effective production. Featuring advanced energy-saving drying systems, optimized ink usage, and intelligent automation via the Easy-Setup interface, the press is designed to meet the evolving needs of converters balancing performance, efficiency, and environmental goals.

“This is more than just an installation—it’s a statement about Africa’s readiness for world-class technology,” said Andreas Wobker, Area Sales Manager Africa at W&H. “And it’s powered by the passion and capability of local industry leaders.”

The event’s first day, held at the Protea Hotel in uMhlanga, featured technical seminars and panels with industry partners including Nordmeccanica, SRF, Flint Group, Rossini, and ReproFlex, exploring topics such as sustainability, workflow automation, and advanced material science.

Day two brought attendees to Packaging World’s Pinetown facility, where the ALPHAFLEX was demonstrated live—highlighting its print precision, fast changeover speeds, and adaptability across solvent and water-based ink systems.

“This investment reflects the bold vision of African converters,” said Jill Celliers, Director at Packaging World. “We are building the future of print right here—powered by local talent and driven by regional demand.”

The installation underscores a growing movement toward localized flexo adoption across the MEA region, as converters seek greater agility, regulatory alignment, and sustainability leadership. It also reinforces the power of strategic partnerships in accelerating Africa’s industrial evolution.
