Al Meera Consumer Goods Company (Q.P.S.C.), in partnership with Al Rayan Bank and the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, marked International Plastic Bag Free Day on July 3 with the launch of a nationwide reusable bag campaign under the slogan “I am not made of plastic.”
The initiative introduced a limited-edition series of reusable shopping bags, available across all Al Meera branches, to encourage customers to replace single-use plastic bags with more sustainable alternatives. The bags were positioned as a practical and symbolic measure to reduce plastic pollution in Qatar.
As part of the event, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change hosted an awareness programme at Al Meera’s Al Mansoura branch, promoting the importance of adopting eco-friendly shopping habits. Customers also participated in a competition with QAR 5,000 worth of shopping vouchers provided by Al Meera.
An Al Meera spokesperson said: “Recognizing that the fight against plastic pollution demands a collective effort from institutions and individuals alike, we are actively empowering our customers to contribute to a more sustainable future. We extend our sincere gratitude to Al Rayan Bank for their invaluable support and collaboration in these vital endeavours.”
Mrs. Eman Al Naemi, Assistant General Manager, Corporate Communications at Al Rayan Bank, added: “Our participation in the International Plastic Bag Free Day initiative is a reflection of our broader commitment to supporting environmental work and meaningful community initiatives.”
International Plastic Bag Free Day is observed annually to highlight the environmental damage caused by single-use plastics and to encourage more sustainable consumer choices.
Al Meera’s broader environmental efforts include Reverse Vending Machines in select branches, allowing customers to recycle bottles and cans in exchange for rewards, further integrating sustainability into everyday shopping.
