Alpla launches UN-approved canister made from 100% recycled HDPE

New UN-approved rHDPE canister supports safer transport of hazardous materials in recyclable packaging.

ALPLAindustrial, the industrial packaging division of the ALPLA Group, has introduced its first canister made of up to 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) HDPE to receive United Nations approval for the transport of hazardous materials. The canister, excluding the closure, is designed for use in sectors such as chemicals and construction.

The approval marks a first in the industry, offering a recycled plastic packaging option that meets international safety standards for dangerous goods. The product complements ALPLAindustrial’s portfolio, which includes large-volume buckets, canisters, and closure systems for industrial and professional applications.

“This is more than just a packaging solution. It’s a symbol of how industrial sectors can transition to greener practices without compromising on performance or regulatory compliance,” said Manfred Dolotow, Plant Manager at ALPLAindustrial.

The launch comes at a time when European Union regulations on packaging sustainability are becoming stricter, with tighter requirements expected by 2030. According to the company, the immediate availability of the rHDPE canister allows customers to adapt early to regulatory changes. “The canisters can be produced immediately, offering a proactive option that supports long-term planning and environmental responsibility,” added Oliver Baumgärtel, Sales Director and Key Account Manager at ALPLAindustrial.

The development builds on the company’s earlier release of RecyClass-certified buckets and is aligned with the wider sustainability strategy of the ALPLA Group. The use of post-consumer recycled HDPE is intended to reduce reliance on virgin plastics while supporting the circular economy.

“It’s not just about meeting standards; it’s about setting them and driving the next revolution in packaging,” said Roland Baumann, General Manager at ALPLAindustrial.

The company sees the UN-approved rHDPE canister as a step toward wider adoption of recycled materials in regulated industrial packaging.
