Amcor and French dairy cooperative Laïta have been recognised at the 2025 Zero Impact Packaging Trophies in the ‘flexible – complex packaging’ category for a new recyclable packaging solution for Paysan Breton Emmental cheese blocks.
The award recognises the replacement of a previous non-recyclable multi-material structure with Amcor’s AmPrima® PP film in the Easy Pack format. The earlier packaging used three different plastic types, while the new solution is based on polypropylene, enabling recycling within the PP flexible-film stream. The structure aligns with guidance from COTREP and the CITEO Tree Tool, which is expected to become operational in France from 2026.
According to the companies, the new packaging delivers a 6% reduction in plastic weight compared with the previous solution, contributing to lower material usage and reduced Extended Producer Responsibility fees. Amcor also reports a 63% carbon footprint reduction compared with the former structure, based on a cradle-to-grave lifecycle assessment.
The AmPrima® PP Easy Pack film is compatible with Laïta’s existing cheese packaging equipment and retains the functional characteristics of the previous format, including shelf life, sealing integrity, line efficiency, and consumer convenience.
“This project, developed with Amcor, addresses several objectives,” said Mathieu Boulc’h, Packaging Manager at Laïta. He added that the change supports compliance with the forthcoming European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation, which requires packaging to be designed for recycling by 2030, and contributes to Laïta’s Science Based Targets initiative to reduce the carbon footprint of purchases by 25% by 2030.
