Amcor Introduces Lightweight Closure for Household Products

Amcor’s new polypropylene closure aims to reduce plastic use while maintaining safety and functionality.

Amcor has launched a new polypropylene (PP) closure designed for household cleaning products, focusing on reduced material use and improved recyclability.

The Hector Child Resistant Closure (CRC) weighs 7.25 grams, making it among the lightest closures in its category. According to Amcor, switching from a conventional 14-gram closure to the Hector can reduce plastic use by 6.75 tonnes for every one million units produced. The closure has received the highest recyclability rating when paired with high-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polyethylene terephthalate (PET) bottles using industry-recognized assessment tools.

The Hector closure can also be manufactured using up to 100% CleanStream® post-consumer recycled plastic for non-contact-sensitive packaging applications.

Designed for products such as bleaches and toilet cleaners, the two-piece closure features a dome-shaped overcap and a directional nozzle for controlled dosing, including access to hard-to-reach areas. Its curved design aligns with the shapes of many cleaner bottles, while thumb and finger holds provide a squeeze-and-turn child-resistant mechanism. The closure is compatible with 38mm HDPE and 36mm PET bottle necks and can be customized for different brands.

“The Hector is very much a consumer-led design, helping brands to create on-shelf appeal while meeting safety requirements and supporting sustainability goals,” said Alejandra Beltran, vice president of research and development at Amcor Global Rigid Packaging Solutions.

Amcor stated that the new design combines visual appeal, user functionality, and material reduction to help manufacturers address evolving packaging requirements.
