Amcor joins Danish-led project to advance recycling of food packaging plastics

Amcor has announced its participation in a new three-year recycling initiative in Denmark aimed at establishing a full-scale system for circular recycling of polyethylene (PE) and polypropylene (PP) food packaging. The project, named Circular Recycling Innovation for Sustainable Packaging (CRISP), is led by the Danish Technological Institute and involves collaboration with food manufacturers and waste management companies.

New project targets circular recycling of polyethylene and polypropylene packaging.

According to Amcor, the initiative seeks to develop a systemic solution for producing food-grade packaging from post-consumer plastic waste. The project will focus on rigid PE and PP packaging collected from households and aims to address challenges related to traceability and material design for recyclability.

Amcor will contribute technical and recycling expertise from its CleanStream® mechanical recycling facility in Leamington Spa, UK, and its packaging production site in Randers, Denmark. The company’s CleanStream® technology is designed to process household plastic waste into high-purity recycled materials and is integrated into existing waste management systems.

Christian Bruno, R&D Director for North East Europe at Amcor, stated, “Sustainable challenges require industry collaboration, and this partnership will demonstrate what can be done when the supply chain comes together.”

The CRISP project aligns with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which mandates that most plastic packaging be recyclable by 2030 and supports Denmark’s Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) scheme. The long-term objective is to establish circular loops for food packaging plastics in line with EU design guidelines.

The project is expected to strengthen Denmark’s plastic recycling infrastructure and support broader European targets for packaging waste reduction.
