Asahi Group Japan has introduced LIKE MILK, the country’s first yeast-based beverage with milk-like properties. The product is packaged in SIG SmallBloc aseptic cartons and filled using the SIG Small 12 Aseptic filling machine. This marks the first commercial collaboration between Asahi Group Japan and SIG.
LIKE MILK is currently in test sales across selected supermarkets and online platforms in Japan, with plans to expand distribution in 2026. The beverage is co-packed by Mori Milk and developed using Asahi’s proprietary yeast technology. Unlike traditional dairy alternatives made from soy, oats, or nuts, LIKE MILK is yeast-based and free from the 28 specified allergenic ingredients. It contains protein and calcium levels comparable to cow’s milk.
“Through LIKE MILK, we aim to help realize a society that embraces food diversity, where everyone can freely enjoy food regardless of physical conditions such as allergies, ethical beliefs, or preferences for non-dairy or health-conscious choices,” said Tomohiro Hata, Senior Manager at Asahi Group Japan.
The SIG Small 12 Aseptic filling machine used for LIKE MILK offers flexibility by handling two carton formats and up to 16 aseptic variants. With a capacity of 12,000 packs per hour, it allows producers to switch between volumes and formats within minutes.
“LIKE MILK is a perfect example of how to leverage the flexibility and speed that our filling technology provides,” said Angela Lu, President & General Manager, Asia Pacific at SIG.
This collaboration highlights the role of agile production technologies in responding to evolving consumer preferences in Japan.
