Bel Group has initiated the global rollout of recyclable paper packaging for its Babybel® cheese products, marking a significant step in its packaging transformation strategy. The company aims to fully replace Babybel’s current cellophane wrap with responsibly sourced paper packaging by 2027 across all production sites and markets.
This shift follows years of research, development, and industrial testing. Since 2020, Babybel® has used a bio-based, home-compostable cellophane. Replacing it with paper introduces complex technical challenges, as packaging must maintain product integrity, microbiological safety, and withstand varying temperature conditions. The brand’s signature red wax coating, essential for protection and preservation, will remain unchanged.
Initial commercial rollout began in the UK, with expansion planned for the US, Canada, and Northern Europe in 2026, followed by all 50 global markets in 2027. The new packaging is certified to ensure sustainable forest management and traceability.
“This evolution has a concrete global impact,” said Linda Neu, Babybel®’s Global Director. “Moving to recyclable paper packaging is a decisive milestone in Babybel®’s sustainable transformation.”
The change is part of Bel’s wider goal to achieve 100% recyclable-ready packaging by 2030. The Group has embedded environmental priorities across its operations, including logistics, ingredient sourcing, and manufacturing.
Delphine Chatelin, Director of RID at Bel, emphasized the scale of the challenge: “It is not simply about replacing one material with another, it requires rethinking the entire protection system.”
Other Bel brands are also testing packaging innovations. Kiri® is piloting paper-based options, while The Laughing Cow® and Materne® compotes are being offered in bulk via a new dispensing system under the DéfiVrac Coalition.
With over two billion Babybel® portions sold annually, the packaging transition signals Bel’s commitment to reducing plastic use and aligning brand development with sustainability goals.
