Bobst has launched the next generation of its EXPERT K5 vacuum metallizer, introducing autonomous machine operation for the flexible packaging industry. The new system integrates artificial intelligence to reduce operator dependency, enhance consistency, and increase productivity.
Equipped with the company’s proprietary iMA (Intelligent Metallizing Assistant) technology, the EXPERT K5 replaces manual adjustments with full automation across key processes. The new system allows simultaneous temperature control of up to 50 evaporators and offers full-width monitoring through high-definition cameras, supporting more accurate and repeatable results.

He cited industry-wide staffing shortages and operator turnover as key challenges that the automation addresses.
The EXPERT K5 also incorporates Bobst Connect, enabling remote machine operation and diagnostics. Centralized control is offered through an updated Operator Console that consolidates machine functions for easier access and reduced training requirements.
Efficiency gains include reduced setup lengths—from 12.5 km to 5 km per roll—and a reported 50% decrease in large-scale defects. The platform also features a faster vacuum pumping system, condition-based maintenance, and extended evaporator life, lowering both operating costs and material usage.
Substrate versatility is another key feature. The EXPERT K5 can process materials such as BOPE, MDO PE, CPP, paper, and ultra-thin BOPP films as thin as 6 microns. The system includes AluBond® for enhanced metal adhesion and barrier performance, while AlOx GEN II is available for transparent, high-barrier coatings.
