Borealis has introduced a new reusable cup system at K 2025, the world’s largest trade fair for plastics and rubber. The initiative marks the first time Messe Düsseldorf is deploying a comprehensive reuse model for drinkware across all food and beverage areas.
The cups are produced from modified polypropylene, tailored for foam applications, and made using chemically recycled feedstock from OMV’s ReOil® technology. The pilot aims to reduce single-use cup waste and assess reuse patterns at a large-scale international event.
“Introducing reusable cups to replace single-use cups at K 2025 aligns perfectly with our motto, ‘The Power of Plastics! Green – Smart – Responsible,’” said Thomas Franken, K Director at Messe Düsseldorf. “This is about showing the industry’s commitment to practical sustainability.”
Maximilian Grasserbauer, Senior VP Circular Economy at OMV, explained, “ReOil® converts end-of-life plastics into circular feedstock. It’s part of our effort to provide reliable, sustainable material solutions to the market.”
Borealis will monitor reuse and recycling rates throughout the event. Special return stations and on-site washing facilities will keep cups in circulation. Any cups discarded as general waste will be collected and recycled. Unused items will be donated for reuse.
Peter Voortmans, VP Marketing Consumer Products at Borealis, emphasized the collaboration: “This initiative shows how reuse systems can make large-scale events more sustainable. Our foamable polypropylene enables lightweight, durable, and recyclable cup designs.”
Partner companies—Arburg, Bockatech, MCC Global IML, and Miko Pac—supported the production, labeling, and technology integration of the cups.
The project will serve as a benchmark for future reuse systems at global exhibitions. Insights gathered will inform broader waste reduction strategies aligned with EU packaging regulations.
