UK: Croxsons, has introduced its Rightweight® packaging approach aimed at reducing material use and associated Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) costs while maintaining product performance.
The initiative focuses on engineering bottles and jars with no excess weight while retaining strength, functionality and shelf presence. According to the company, the approach can reduce glass weight by up to 30%, supporting improved recyclability and lowering waste volumes sent to landfill.
Croxsons has already applied the method to selected products. A 330ml ‘Mountain’ soft drinks bottle delivers a 9.5% weight reduction per unit. Its 700ml ‘Apollo’ spirits bottle has been reduced from 575g to 400g, with applications spanning gin, rum, tequila, vodka and whisky formats. The company plans to extend the Rightweight® standard across additional products in the coming months.
Tim Croxson, chief executive, said the approach is intended to optimise design without compromising performance. “Rightweight® is more than just lightweighting products; it reflects our approach to bottle and jar design by creating packaging that is engineered to be exactly what it needs to be,” he said.
He added that the process considers the full lifecycle of packaging, including filling, handling, transport and compatibility with automated production lines. “Simply removing weight for the sake of it can create new issues, including reduced rigidity, increased breakage, or a poorer overall experience,” he said.
The development follows more than 16 years of work and is positioned to support customers seeking to meet environmental, social and governance targets while maintaining packaging performance and product protection.
The company said reducing material use can contribute to lower EPR fee exposure for producers by decreasing the total packaging weight placed on the market. It also stated that the approach aims to balance operational efficiency with product integrity across supply chains. rollout is expected across multiple categories.
