DS Smith and Raymarine develop fibre-based packaging to replace plastic in radar products

New fibre-based packaging aims to enhance product protection and reduce environmental impact.

DS Smith and Raymarine have introduced a fibre-based packaging solution for electronic and radar display products, replacing expanded polyethylene (EPE) foam previously used in Raymarine’s packaging. The collaboration is focused on eliminating single-use plastic and improving supply chain efficiency.

Developed by DS Smith’s design team, the new solution uses corrugated cardboard materials to protect Raymarine’s Quantum radar units during shipping. The design includes a 90-degree angled flute structure to improve shock resistance, crumple zones to absorb energy from impacts, and fibre-based air cushions for added support. Precisely shaped cardboard inserts secure the radar equipment, while a separate internal box is used for packaging accessories.

Levente Szabó, Cluster Director at DS Smith, Hungary, said, “We are dedicated to helping our customers in finding new solutions for sustainable and circular ready packaging… We have successfully replaced EPE, and we can support manufacturers in both consumer and industrial sectors.”

Raymarine’s new packaging is fully recyclable and made with 84% recycled content, up from 40% in its previous solution. According to the companies, the packaging is also customisable in size, adaptable to varying order volumes, and withstands a range of climatic conditions. It has reduced CO2 emissions by more than 60% annually compared to the previous solution.

Andrew Smith, Vice President of Supply Chain at Raymarine, noted, “Thanks to our collaboration with DS Smith we are making positive progress towards that goal. The new packaging ensures that products from our radar range are well-protected during transit while also meeting the demands of diverse climatic conditions and long-haul international shipping.”

The packaging was recognised in the Transit category at the 2024 WorldStar Awards by the World Packaging Association for innovation and sustainability.

DS Smith reports a 75% reduction in required pallets for shipping, improving warehousing and logistics efficiency.
