DS Smith Tecnicarton Introduces Corrugated Cardboard Trays for Automotive Packaging

Corrugated trays offer a recyclable alternative to expanded polypropylene for automotive parts.

DS Smith Tecnicarton, a unit of International Paper operating in Iberia, has developed corrugated cardboard trays designed to replace expanded polypropylene (EPP) packaging in the automotive sector.

The 100% fibre-based trays aim to provide a single-use alternative for transporting heavy and bulky components, such as automotive headlights. The design includes a double-fingerprint die cut, enabling safe positioning and immobilization of parts on both top and bottom surfaces to prevent scratches and damage during transit or storage. The trays also support stackability and integration into larger packaging to optimize space use.

According to DS Smith Tecnicarton, the new trays can be manufactured quickly and meet the same protection requirements as traditional plastic packaging. “We offer our customers a flexible and economic packaging solution with a low tooling cost,” said Antonio Cebrián, Commercial Director, DS Smith Tecnicarton. “We are committed to helping our customers in reaching their sustainability and circular economy targets.”

The trays are positioned as a viable option during return flow failures or emergencies in the automotive supply chain. These scenarios may include vehicle malfunctions, software issues, or disruptions caused by global events or natural disasters.

The product was recognized in the Transit Category at the 2025 WorldStar Global Packaging Awards.

DS Smith Tecnicarton focuses on packaging for automotive and industrial applications, particularly in areas requiring single-use or returnable options. DS Smith operates in 34 countries and continues to pursue its sustainability targets under the “Now and Next” strategy aimed at supporting a circular economy.
