Emirates Biotech has announced the launch of its Embio product line, a portfolio of PolyLactic Acid (PLA) biopolymers developed and produced in the United Arab Emirates. The range is positioned to offer a regionally manufactured alternative to conventional plastics, aimed at supporting packaging and materials producers across the Middle East.

The Embio name reflects both the company’s local roots and its focus on biotechnology. The initial rollout includes PLA grades suitable for applications such as rigid and flexible packaging, coated paperboard, fibers, nonwovens, and 3D printing.

With this launch, Emirates Biotech is beginning pre-marketing activities in the Middle East, focusing on faster lead times and smaller minimum order quantities through local inventory. According to the company, this move is expected to ease the transition to plant-based materials for regional converters and packaging manufacturers.

“Our launch of Embio products marks a major milestone in our journey to make renewable and compostable plastics accessible across the Middle East,” said Marc Verbruggen, Chief Executive Officer of Emirates Biotech.

The company’s technical team will support customers with application development and processing trials. Technical Solutions Manager Watid Watanyupaisan stated that the grades are engineered to run on existing equipment, aiming to minimise operational disruptions.

Prashant Lohade, Sales Development Manager, noted that maintaining local stock improves flexibility. “With Embio grades now available in the UAE, customers can access PLA in smaller volumes and benefit from shorter lead times,” he said.

The PLA materials are industrially compostable, recyclable, and free of persistent microplastics. Christophe Enkiri, Product Manager, added that all grades are tested for compliance with food-contact, bio-based, and compostability standards.

The product launch supports broader sustainability goals, including the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 initiative and regional efforts to establish a circular economy.
