Flexo strengthens position as packaging print market evolves alongside gravure

Flexo and gravure continue to evolve as automation, sustainability and digital technologies reshape global packaging print dynamics.

Flexographic printing continues to lead the global packaging print landscape, while gravure maintains relevance in high-growth sectors, according to recent market analysis from Smithers. The combined value of flexo and gravure printing is estimated at $347.6 billion in 2025, reflecting the scale and continued importance of both technologies in packaging applications.

Flexo remains the larger process by both value and volume, supported by its strong presence in labels, flexible packaging and corrugated. The process is benefiting from advancements in automation, including machine learning, robotics and reduced make-ready technologies, enabling converters to improve efficiency and manage shorter production runs more effectively.

Gravure, although smaller in overall market size, is projected to grow at a slightly faster pace, driven largely by expanding packaging demand in Asia and its continued dominance in décor and industrial printing. Its ability to deliver consistent, high-quality output over long runs continues to support its role in high-volume applications.

The competitive overlap between the two processes is most evident in flexible packaging and labels, where flexo is steadily gaining share due to lower costs, improved prepress flexibility and sustainability advantages. However, gravure retains a strong position in applications where precision and repeatability remain critical.

Sustainability and digitalisation are key forces influencing both technologies. The shift towards water-based inks, reduced solvent usage and circular packaging requirements is accelerating change, while digital and hybrid printing technologies are reshaping short-run production economics.

Looking ahead, flexo is expected to consolidate its position across mainstream packaging applications, while gravure will continue to play a key role in long-run and specialised segments.
