Heidelberg Celebrates 175 Years of Innovation and Industry Leadership

Heidelberg, a key player in the global printing technology industry, marks its 175th anniversary this year, tracing its roots back to a bell foundry and machine shop established in Frankenthal on March 11, 1850.

From high-quality commercial products to packaging – HEIDELBERG has lived and breathed printing for 175 years.

Initially manufacturing bells and mechanical components, the company gradually shifted its focus to printing presses. The 1921 introduction of the “Original Heidelberger Tiegel” became a pivotal moment, setting the foundation for Heidelberg’s emergence as a leader in the printing sector.

Today, Heidelberg operates in approximately 170 countries and is best known for its Speedmaster series of presses. The company is adapting to industry changes by expanding into digital printing and hybrid production, including automated and AI-assisted workflows. The Jetfire 50 digital press, developed with Canon and launched at drupa 2024, is among its latest offerings.

Heidelberg’s strategy includes growth in packaging printing, which now accounts for over 50% of its sales. This segment has seen a significant global uptick, driven by increased demand for fiber-based, recyclable packaging as alternatives to plastic. Additionally, the company maintains a large international service network, supporting its lifecycle business.

Looking ahead, Heidelberg is investing in green technologies, automation, robotics, and software development. Its industrial division is targeting sectors such as high-precision engineering and electric mobility infrastructure. Management projects growth potential of over €300 million by the 2028/2029 financial year, supported by internal efficiency improvements.

The company’s anniversary year features a series of events, including an international celebration at its largest production site in Wiesloch-Walldorf. A newly redesigned customer center, named “Home of Print,” will serve as a focal point for these activities.
