Henkel rolls out phthalate-free sealants for metal packaging sector

Henkel’s new Darex COV sealants offer a regulatory-compliant solution for sealing metal containers.

Henkel Adhesive Technologies has launched a new series of Darex COV sealants that are free from phthalate-based plasticizers, targeting metal packaging applications such as pails and drums. The new PVC-based compounds aim to offer safer and more compliant solutions in response to tightening regulatory frameworks and sustainability demands across the packaging industry.

The formulations are designed to replace existing products while meeting current and anticipated legal standards, including the European Union’s REACH regulation. They are also positioned to address health and environmental concerns linked to phthalates—classified in some forms as substances toxic to reproduction and listed as substances of very high concern (SVHC) by the European Commission.

“Phthalates are considered endocrine disruptors – substances that disrupt the hormone system – and therefore have long-term health and environmental consequences,” said Laura Baussà, Market Strategy Manager at Henkel. “With the new Darex COV series, we are offering our customers safe alternatives to protect employees and end users without compromising on performance.”

The development focused on a one-component sealant system suited for nozzle application, with stable viscosity and resistance to solvents, ketones, and oils. The Darex COV 73 variant also avoids ingredients classified as carcinogenic, mutagenic, or toxic to reproduction (CMR), while enabling lower curing temperatures that can reduce energy use and carbon emissions.

The sealant was introduced through a pilot project with Emballator, a Swedish metal packaging manufacturer. In 2024, the company converted several facilities to the new formulation. Henkel noted that the switch demonstrated effective performance and smooth application in live production settings.

Henkel is implementing a phased rollout of the Darex COV range and supporting customers during the transition to the new formulations.
