Huhtamaki Unveils Compostable Ice Cream Cups to Expand Sustainable Portfolio

Huhtamaki’s new compostable ice cream cups aim to combine environmental responsibility with consumer convenience.

Huhtamaki has launched a new line of ice cream cups that are both home and industrial compostable, as well as recyclable, further strengthening the company’s sustainable food packaging portfolio.

The Finnish packaging group says the new solution is made from certified, responsibly sourced paperboard with a bio-based barrier coating. By limiting the plastic content to under 10% and shifting from fossil-based to bio-based materials, the cups are designed to align with evolving sustainability regulations and market expectations.

The product addresses the growing demand for circular and compostable packaging in the frozen dessert segment while maintaining performance standards for foodservice applications.

Fredrik Davidsson, President of Foodservice Packaging at Huhtamaki, commented: “Our new ice cream cups demonstrate Huhtamaki’s expertise in paperboard and barrier technologies, as well as our dedication to sustainable innovation. We are proud to offer a product that not only meets the highest environmental standards but also delivers the high quality our customers expect.”

The company states that the launch is part of its ongoing efforts to support customers in reducing their environmental footprint, particularly as industries shift toward more stringent environmental compliance and consumer-driven expectations for sustainable products.

The cups are suitable for home and industrial composting, offering end-users flexibility depending on local waste management infrastructure. In addition, the recyclable nature of the cups supports existing paper recycling streams, contributing to a more circular packaging economy.

This new product line joins Huhtamaki’s existing range of foodservice packaging designed to meet environmental goals without compromising functionality. The cups are now available for commercial orders across its operational markets.

With this release, Huhtamaki continues its efforts to replace conventional packaging with more sustainable alternatives, underlining its commitment to innovation in packaging that supports both planetary and business goals.
