The Kenya Extended Producer Responsibility Organization (KEPRO) and the National Environmental Complaints Committee (NECC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to enhance coordination in addressing environmental challenges, with a focus on waste management and compliance.
The agreement, formalized at a signing event attended by KEPRO CEO James Odongo and NECC CEO Mary Njogu, sets the foundation for collaborative efforts in environmental education, enforcement support, public awareness, and policy advocacy. Also present were NECC Committee Chairman Hon. Godana Doyo, member Ernest Mutinda, and KEPRO officers Faith Mwikali and Zacharia Wambugu.
KEPRO, responsible for implementing Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) in Kenya, works to ensure that producers manage the post-consumer stage of their products. NECC, a statutory agency under the Ministry of Environment, handles environmental complaints and promotes adherence to national regulations.
The partnership is expected to strengthen enforcement mechanisms and improve community-level awareness on issues such as pollution, illegal dumping, and poor waste practices. It also aligns with Kenya’s broader environmental commitments, including the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the Paris Agreement.
“This partnership will empower citizens and producers alike to play a more active role in protecting our environment,” said NECC CEO Mary Njogu. KEPRO CEO James Odongo added, “We recognize that lasting environmental impact is only possible through coordinated efforts.”
The MoU aims to harmonize the mandates of both organizations and expand their capacity to engage stakeholders. Through joint initiatives, KEPRO and NECC hope to create a more responsive and effective system for managing environmental risks, particularly in waste-related areas.
