Mondi and Ekornes replace plastic mattress wrap with recyclable paper-based solution

New CompressWrap paper solution by Mondi supports circular packaging and safer handling in mattress delivery.

Mondi has partnered with Norwegian furniture manufacturer Ekornes to introduce a paper-based packaging system for wrapping high-end mattresses, replacing the company’s previous plastic-based solution.

The new CompressWrap system, developed by Mondi, combines two types of FunctionalBarrier Paper to ensure secure compression and transport of mattresses. In the first stage, FunctionalBarrier Paper 95/5 is used for its durability and vacuum-sealing capacity, supporting mattress compression without damage. This is followed by an outer layer made from FunctionalBarrier Paper Reduce, designed to tightly wrap and protect the mattress during shipping.

Ekornes, known as the largest furniture producer in the Nordic region, implemented CompressWrap to align with its sustainability goals and to respond to increasing consumer demand for recyclable alternatives. The solution is made using fibre from renewable sources and is designed to be recyclable, in accordance with the 4evergreen ‘Design for Circularity Guidelines’.

The new wrap system is compatible with Ekornes’ existing packaging equipment, eliminating the need for operational changes during the transition from plastic to paper. According to both companies, the shift is not only environmentally beneficial but also cost-efficient and practical.

“This new partnership with Mondi means we can now wrap that promise in a solution that aligns with our commitment to sustainability,” said Pål Aage Nordahl, Managing Director at Ekornes Beds AS.

Ola Forsberg, Industry Group Manager Foaming Papers at Mondi, added that the collaboration aimed to address industry-specific needs while supporting a circular economy.

In addition to its recyclability, CompressWrap allows for safer unpacking, as it can be opened without knives or cutters. The innovation will be featured at FachPack 2025 in Nuremberg, where it will also receive the German Packaging Award in the Sustainability category.
