Mondi and Saga Nutrition introduce recyclable mono-material pet food packaging

New mono-material packaging aims to support circular economy in the pet food sector.

Packaging manufacturer Mondi has partnered with French pet food producer Saga Nutrition to develop recyclable mono-material packaging for dry pet food products. The collaboration aims to reduce waste and align with circular economy targets by replacing traditional multi-material plastic with a single-material solution.

Launched in October 2024, the new packaging is part of Mondi’s re/cycle portfolio and is designed to meet the company’s internal Path to Circularity Scorecard as well as CEFLEX recycling guidelines. It maintains high-barrier protection against moisture, fat, and odour and is suitable for packaging formats of 3 kilograms and above.

Olivier Werbrouck, Regional Sales Consumer Flexibles France at Mondi, stated: “As consumer demand for sustainable solutions grows, we are excited to work with Saga Nutrition to deliver packaging that truly supports a circular economy when it comes to pet food.”

The re/cycle FlexiBag also offers functional features such as secure sealing to facilitate handling and storage for consumers. The material’s durability ensures product protection during logistics and retail handling.

Jérôme de Solliers, CEO of Saga Nutrition, said, “This collaboration with Mondi is a key milestone in our sustainability journey. By transitioning to recyclable mono-material packaging, we’re contributing to a circular economy while maintaining the high quality our customers trust.”

The switch to mono-material packaging reflects growing demand across the industry for recyclable solutions that do not compromise on product preservation or shelf appeal. Both companies view the development as a practical step toward meeting future sustainability standards while maintaining product integrity in a competitive market.
