Nestlé Nigeria adopts clear caps to improve plastic recyclability

Nestlé Nigeria expands use of transparent bottle caps to enhance recycling efforts in line with global sustainability goals.

Nestlé Nigeria has extended the use of clear bottle caps across its entire Pure Life bottled water range, excluding Pure Life Protect, in a move aimed at improving recyclability and supporting its broader sustainability targets.

Originally introduced on the 33cl Pure Life bottle, the transition to transparent caps removes the traditional blue pigmentation, making the caps easier to identify and sort during recycling. The initiative is intended to support local recycling systems and advance a circular economy by increasing the value and usability of post-consumer plastic.

According to the company, this change is part of its ongoing effort to reduce plastic waste and encourage more sustainable packaging. Nestlé Nigeria had previously introduced bottles containing 50% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET), aiming to lower the use of virgin plastic.

Olutayo Olatunji, Business Executive Officer at Nestlé Waters Nigeria, said the switch to clear caps signals the company’s continued focus on sustainable practices.
“The clear cap isn’t just a design update; it is a reflection of our deeper commitment to sustainability,” Olatunji stated.

Victoria Uwadoka, Corporate Communications, Public Affairs and Sustainability Lead at Nestlé Nigeria, added that the shift reflects purposeful design.

“Introducing the clear cap represents a meaningful shift in how we design with purpose. Across our brand categories, we are thinking beyond function to impact,” she said.

This development aligns with Nestlé’s global objective to make all its packaging recyclable or reusable by 2025. Locally, it reinforces the company’s effort to provide environmentally conscious hydration options to Nigerian consumers while supporting recycling infrastructure.
