Polysmart invests $60 million in Nigeria’s largest plastic recycling facility

Polysmart Packaging Limited has announced a $60 million investment to build Nigeria’s largest plastic recycling plant, with completion targeted for July 2026, according to Guardian Nigeria.

The new facility, set to begin operations in phases starting March 2026, will have the capacity to process 100,000 tons of mixed plastics annually. This includes food-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) and non-food grade materials such as HDPE, LDPE, and PP.

The plant will be equipped with advanced recycling technologies, including the Sorema Plastic Recycling System, Tomra Sorting Solution, and two Erema Vacunite 2621T V-LeaN SSP units. These systems are designed to meet regulatory standards from the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

“This is a transformative moment for Nigeria’s green economy,” said Wasiu Abolaji Balogun, Managing Director and CEO of Polysmart. “The $60 million dollar investment is not just in machinery and infrastructure; it’s an investment in the human capital of Nigeria.”

The company expects the project to create thousands of direct and indirect jobs across waste collection, sorting, and operations. It will also reduce Nigeria’s reliance on virgin plastic imports and contribute to significant environmental benefits, including diverting an estimated 5.5 billion PET bottles annually from landfills and waterways.

Polysmart states the plant will enable carbon savings of up to 170,000 tons, aligning with global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) benchmarks. The company is working with federal and state agencies to ensure compliance with international environmental and safety standards.

This development is positioned to support domestic manufacturing and packaging sectors by supplying certified recycled materials, while reinforcing Nigeria’s role as a regional hub for sustainable industrial practices.
