ScottsMiracle-Gro & ProAmpac Advances Insecticide Packaging

Flexible pouch packaging aims to reduce plastic waste while maintaining product performance.

ScottsMiracle-Gro and packaging manufacturer ProAmpac have launched a new flexible spouted pouch for Ortho Home Defense Max, designed to reduce plastic waste while maintaining product durability and ease of use.

The new pouch replaces traditional rigid plastic containers with a lightweight, flexible alternative. According to ScottsMiracle-Gro, the switch reduces plastic use by 90% per unit. The pouch is also refillable, allowing consumers to reuse existing dispensing systems rather than buying new ones.

“The new Ortho Home Defense Max packaging represents a major step forward in sustainability and consumer convenience,” said Keith Miller, senior packaging engineer at ScottsMiracle-Gro. “By introducing a spouted pouch, we’ve significantly reduced our plastic packaging footprint while ensuring that our customers continue to receive the high-performance pest control solutions they trust.”

Developed in collaboration between the two companies, the pouch leverages ProAmpac’s chemical- and UV-resistant materials to maintain product integrity. Its lighter weight makes it more suitable for e-commerce shipping, which the companies say supports environmental and logistical benefits.

“Our goal was to create a packaging solution that meets sustainability targets without compromising performance,” said Isha Labhasetwar, product development manager at ProAmpac. “By transitioning from a rigid container to a flexible pouch, this innovative design not only reduces plastic waste but also improves ease of use for consumers and aligns perfectly with e-commerce logistics.”

The packaging redesign is positioned as part of broader sustainability efforts within the lawn and garden sector and has been recognized for its reduced environmental impact and functional design.
