Siegwerk, Borouge and TPN launch recyclable mono-material pouch for dry food packaging

Fully recyclable, mono-material stand-up pouch.

Siegwerk, Borouge, and Thailand-based TPN Food Packaging Co., Ltd. have jointly developed a fully recyclable, mono-material barrier stand-up pouch designed for oxygen-sensitive dry products such as nuts and pet food. The collaboration marks the first co-development project under the Siegwerk-Borouge partnership, with TPN overseeing production.

The pouch, made entirely of polyethylene, is designed to maintain mechanical strength, seal integrity, stiffness, and printability while offering recyclability. Its structure combines Borouge’s Borstar® FB5600, a bimodal high-density polyethylene produced using Borealis’ proprietary technology, with Anteo™ PE sealant film for efficient sealing at high packing speeds.

To achieve barrier performance, Siegwerk contributed its CIRKIT OXYBAR BC1582 oxygen barrier coating, which delivers oxygen transmission rates below 1cc/m²/day at 23°C and 50% relative humidity, comparable to metallized PET. The design also integrates Siegwerk’s CIRKIT CLEARPRIME de-inking coating, enabling printed layers to be delaminated and recycled into high-quality, uncolored polyethylene feedstock.

Anton Wolfsberger, Vice President, Circular Economy and Packaging, Global Marketing, Borouge, said: “This collaboration brings together material science, ink innovation, and manufacturing excellence to deliver a mono-material solution that is fully recyclable and de-inkable. It supports our customers in creating packaging that is not only high-performing but also designed for a circular economy.”

Printing expertise was provided by TPN, which applied rotogravure technology to the MDO-PE printing layer at production speeds of about 200 meters per minute.

Dr. Stephane Bertaux, Head of Brand Owner Collaboration and Sustainability for Southeast Asia at Siegwerk Thailand, added: “This development is a great example of how collaboration between different areas of expertise and knowledge can achieve the production of high-performance mono-material packaging that is de-inkable and fully recyclable.”

The pouch is positioned as a scalable alternative to multi-material laminates, aiming to support wider industry adoption of recyclable packaging.
