SIG and Zydus to launch India’s first single-serve spouted pouches for liquid medicine

The new format offers pre-portioned dosing and aims to improve convenience, hygiene, and safety in liquid medicine delivery.

SIG  has partnered with Zydus Lifesciences Ltd. to introduce India’s first single-serve spouted pouches for liquid cough and cold medications. The packaging innovation, developed using SIG’s StrawCap 30 Linked spout and Motion Servo 3.2 filling technology, marks a shift from traditional multi-dose bottles to pre-portioned pouches designed for direct consumption.

The solution will debut with Zydus’ Deriphyllin CoughGo in 5 ml and 10 ml formats. These units are intended to offer precise dosing, reduce waste from expired medications, and eliminate the need for spoons or syringes.

Dr. Sharvil P. Patel, Managing Director of Zydus Lifesciences Ltd., stated: “Continuing with our patient-centric approaches, we are introducing Deriphyllin CoughGo in single-serve spouted pouches utilizing SIG’s advanced filling technology. We have always championed innovation that brings greater convenience for our patients and with this launch we set a new standard for safe intake of medicine which also helps in reducing product waste in India.”

The SIG StrawCap 30 Linked is a tethered spout design with an integrated straw, allowing mess-free consumption. It uses up to three times less plastic than traditional closures and is intended to reduce plastic litter by keeping the cap attached to the pack. The pouches are expected to be paired in future with SIG’s Terra RecShield film, which is designed for recycling.

Christoph Wegener, Chief Markets Officer at SIG, noted, “With SIG Motion Servo 3.2 installed at Zydus and SIG StrawCap 30 Linked, we are transforming how liquid medications are delivered – making them easier to dose, safer to consume, and less likely to go to waste.”

The initiative highlights both companies’ focus on improving patient access and safety through packaging innovation in the Indian pharmaceutical sector.
