SIG launches recycle-ready wine bag-in-box packaging with APR recognition

SIG debuts new wine bag-in-box format, validated for recyclability by the Association of Plastic Recyclers.

SIG has introduced a new recycle-ready bag-in-box packaging solution for wine, using its SIG Terra RecShield BD laminate and SIG Terra FlexTap. The new offering is designed to meet the performance demands of wine distribution while also aligning with recyclability criteria.

The bag-in-box format marks SIG’s first wine packaging to be recognized under the APR Design® Guide for Plastics Recyclability. The Association of Plastic Recyclers (APR) confirmed that the structure meets its highest recyclability standards through the Critical Guidance Protocol (FPE-CG-01 Path 1A).

“Wine brings unique packaging challenges, particularly when it comes to balancing oxygen barrier, ease of dispensing, and robustness throughout conversion, filling, and distribution with recyclability,” said Teresa Bernal-Lara, Ph.D., Global Head of Film Development, Bag-in-Box and Spouted Pouch at SIG. “With SIG Terra RecShield BD, we’ve developed a recycle-ready laminate that performs under the rigorous demands of wine distribution and preservation.”

The new packaging is the latest in SIG’s Terra portfolio to be recognized by APR. Earlier recognized structures include SIG Terra RecShield PE-42B for water (2021) and SIG Terra RecShield D for post-mix syrup (2024). Each structure has been tailored to specific beverage applications while aiming to maintain recyclability within existing infrastructure.

“Reaching this milestone shows we can prioritize sustainability and circularity while also providing excellent product protection, quality, and reliability,” said Jami Leveen, Head of Sustainability at SIG North America.

The wine bag-in-box joins SIG’s growing list of efforts to simplify materials and reduce waste across its packaging solutions, contributing to broader goals around decarbonization and circular design in the beverage industry.
