TIPA and Bio4Pack roll out certified compostable produce labels amid EU packaging reforms

The new compostable labels are designed to integrate with existing production lines for fresh produce packaging.

TIPA Compostable Packaging, along with its European subsidiary Bio4Pack, has launched a certified home-compostable label for fresh produce in partnership with Bio4Life, a company specializing in compostable adhesive technology.

The labels combine TIPA’s compostable film with Bio4Life’s adhesive, BioTak, which is fully certified to European compost standards. The resulting product is designed to adhere securely to various fruit and vegetable surfaces and decompose alongside organic waste, in line with the EU’s Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which will require compostable labels on produce.

“Traditional plastic labels on produce often end up in food waste bins, contaminating organic streams and adding to microplastic pollution,” said Daphna Nissenbaum, co-founder and CEO of TIPA.

The compostable film used in the labels is elastic, enabling it to conform to the surfaces of a broad range of produce types such as bananas, oranges, avocados, and cucumbers. The adhesive leaves no residue and the label resists moisture, discoloration, and black marks typically associated with conventional stickers. Storage suitability spans room temperature to freezing.

In addition to fresh produce, the labels can be used for packaging identifiers such as price look-up codes, ingredient lists, barcodes, and closures for both food and fashion applications. They are compatible with standard printing presses and can be applied manually or via machines.

The labels were recently presented at Packaging Innovations 2025 in the UK. The launch follows other sustainable packaging initiatives by TIPA, including compostable trays made from rice waste. These trays are certified both compostable and recyclable and are currently available in markets across the U.S., Europe, and Australia.
