JOHANNESBURG, South Africa — Walmart has announced plans to open its first branded stores in South Africa before the end of 2025, marking a new phase in its long-term strategy for growth on the African continent.
The retail giant, which owns a majority stake in South African company Massmart, confirmed that preparations for store openings are already underway, with official launch dates to be revealed in October.
The upcoming stores will stock a wide selection of merchandise, including fresh groceries, household goods, apparel, and technology. Walmart stated that it will also focus on sourcing products locally, working with small and medium-sized suppliers from across the continent.
This expansion follows Walmart’s inaugural Africa Growth Summit in April, which showcased suppliers from 12 African countries and led to new supplier partnerships.
“Walmart’s South African stores will offer a wide range of merchandise… while celebrating the country’s rich culture,” said Kath McLay, Walmart International President and CEO.
The company also confirmed that its South African rollout will include digital capabilities aimed at enhancing the in-store shopping experience.
“We’re thrilled to begin this journey introducing the iconic Walmart brand to South African associates, customers and communities,” said Miles Van Rensburg, Massmart president and CEO.
Van Rensburg emphasized Walmart’s pricing strategy as key to building consumer trust. “It is this balance and mindset on quality and Every Day Low Prices that enables us to deliver and build customer trust,” he said.
In addition to retail operations, Walmart says it plans to invest in local community programs focused on economic mobility, food security, and sustainable supply chains, aligning with its global community engagement practices.
