Amcor has entered a strategic collaboration with Metsä Group and G. Mondini to develop an integrated fibre-based packaging system for food applications, combining materials, barrier technology, and machinery into a single solution.
The partnership brings together Metsä Group’s moulded fibre technology, Amcor’s barrier liners and top-web films, and G. Mondini’s tray-forming and sealing equipment. The result is a fully integrated tray system designed for protein and chilled ready-meal applications, where packaging performance and shelf life are critical.
The fibre tray is based on Muoto, a moulded fibre solution developed by Metsä Spring, using renewable wood materials. This is combined with barrier layers and lidding films to provide protection for perishable foods while supporting compatibility with modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) and skin packaging technologies.
The system has been engineered to function as a unified packaging format rather than separate components. According to the companies, this approach is intended to reduce complexity for food manufacturers by ensuring compatibility between materials and machinery while maintaining production efficiency.
Designed to run on G. Mondini’s tray-sealing systems, the solution supports implementation without major changes to existing production environments. It also incorporates features such as microwaveable, ovenable, and easy-peel options, depending on application requirements.
The development reflects a broader industry shift toward fibre-based alternatives to plastic trays, particularly in fresh and chilled food categories. By integrating material, barrier, and equipment capabilities, the collaboration aims to provide a scalable option for manufacturers seeking to reduce plastic use while maintaining food protection and operational performance.
