Boretech and ECC plan Africa’s first dedicated PET-tray recycling line

Boretech has signed a contract with Egyptian Chinese Company (ECC) to supply a 4,000kg/h PET-tray washing line for the GreenTech project in Egypt, targeting closed-loop recycling of post-consumer packaging. The installation is described by Boretech as the first dedicated PET-tray washing project in Africa and the Middle East. It will convert used PET trays into clean flakes intended for tray-to-tray recycling.

The project addresses the recovery of trays used for fresh-food packaging, other food applications and industrial logistics. Recycling this material can be technically demanding because compressed bales are difficult to loosen, while mixed structures, adhesive labels, glue residues and brittle material can affect recovery rates and flake cleanliness. Boretech’s automated, modular system combines material loosening, intensive hot washing, its Mega Aspirator technology and processes designed to improve yield. According to the supplier, the configuration is intended to limit breakage, recover more PET and produce flakes suitable for reuse in tray manufacture.

ECC operates in the plastics and polyester-fibre sector and is investing in the project to improve the quality and production capacity of its recycled-polyester output. Consulting engineer Tarek Abdelmawgoud advised during the planning phase.

Mahmoud Samir, owner of ECC, said: “Boretech’s innovative recycling technologies and extensive project experience in PET recycling give us great confidence in this collaboration.”

For packaging producers and recyclers, the investment establishes dedicated regional infrastructure for a PET format that can be more difficult to process than bottles. Boretech said the Egyptian installation could provide a replicable model for tray-to-tray recycling elsewhere in the region, supporting the wider recovery of post-consumer PET packaging.
