Constantia Flexibles, one of the world’s largest flexible packaging manufacturers, has had its updated climate targets validated by the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi). The validation confirms that the company’s goals align with the SBTi’s criteria to limit global warming to 1.5°C.
Based in Vienna, the company is targeting a 50.4% reduction in absolute Scope 1 and 2 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2032, using 2024 as the base year. It also plans to cut Scope 3 emissions—arising from purchased goods and services, energy-related activities, operational waste, and the processing of sold products—by 30% over the same period.
Looking toward 2050, Constantia Flexibles aims to achieve Net-Zero, with a 90% reduction in Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, also from a 2024 baseline. Remaining emissions at that point must be neutralized.
These new targets replace previous goals and reflect progress already made. In 2024, 79% of the company’s electricity came from renewable sources, accounting for approximately 37% of its total energy use. From a 2015 baseline, the company had already reduced emissions from its own production by 15%, and emissions from purchased electricity by over 60%.
“Validation by SBTi is more than a recognition—it is a responsibility,” said Marc Rademacher, EVP Consumer Commercial and Group R&D and Sustainability at Constantia Flexibles. “We know that achieving Net-Zero will require continued effort, innovation, and collaboration across the entire value chain.”
To support these goals, the company is developing a climate roadmap, which includes evaluating site-level reduction measures and working closely with suppliers and customers to address emissions linked to key raw materials.
