Huhtamaki collaborates with Hesburger on fibre lids for beverage packaging

The new fibre lids have been developed for hot and cold beverage applications in foodservice packaging.

Huhtamaki and Hesburger have introduced a new fibre-based beverage lid developed as part of a packaging collaboration aimed at replacing conventional plastic lids in foodservice applications.

The new lids will be used on Hesburger’s hot and cold beverage cups and represent a further step in the company’s transition towards fibre-based packaging formats. Manufactured from renewable plant-based fibres at Huhtamaki’s foodservice production facility in Alf, Germany, the lids have been developed to meet the functional requirements of beverage packaging while reducing reliance on plastic components.

From a packaging innovation perspective, the development addresses one of the more technically demanding areas of foodservice packaging. Beverage lids must combine rigidity, heat and moisture resistance, secure cup fitment and consumer convenience while maintaining product integrity during transportation and consumption. Achieving these performance characteristics with a fibre-based structure has traditionally been more challenging than converting cups or containers from plastic to fibre.

According to the companies, the lid design has been engineered for both hot and cold beverages and includes structural modifications to improve sealing performance and reduce the risk of leakage. The fibre lids do not contain plastic coatings and are designed to be recyclable and compostable after use.

The innovation forms part of a broader industry effort to replace single-use plastic packaging components with fibre-based alternatives without compromising functionality. As regulators, brand owners and foodservice operators continue to focus on material reduction and recyclability, beverage lids have emerged as a key area for packaging redesign and material innovation.

The transition from plastic lids to fibre alternatives is expected to reduce approximately 41,000kg of plastic annually across Hesburger’s operations.

“The development work with Hesburger has been both smooth and insightful, supporting the sustainability goals of both organizations. This collaboration is a strong reflection of our valued partnership with Hesburger,” said Mira Eklund, Key Account Manager at Huhtamaki.

The rollout will take place gradually as existing plastic lid inventories are depleted, with the new fibre lids becoming part of Hesburger’s beverage packaging portfolio.
