Huhtamaki Introduces Chrome III Innovation for Sustainable Flexible Packaging

In an era defined by changing regulations and a growing emphasis on environmental responsibility, leaders in the packaging industry are constantly on the lookout for innovative solutions to meet evolving market demands.

In response to these challenges, Huhtamaki, a key player in the packaging industry, has unveiled a groundbreaking innovation in Gravure Cylinder technology for Flexible Packaging. This development comes at a crucial time, as it addresses the repercussions of a recent landmark decision by the European Court of Justice (ECJ) regarding the use of chromium trioxide, a substance widely used in the gravure printing industry.

The ECJ’s ruling invalidated the use of chromium trioxide, raising concerns about potential disruptions within the industry. However, Huhtamaki had already been proactively addressing this challenge since 2016, well ahead of the EU regulations.

In a bold move to ensure business continuity for its customers in the face of regulatory shifts, Huhtamaki is proud to introduce Chrome III plating as a sustainable alternative to chromium trioxide. According to Florian Ullinger, Manager Reproduction & Cylinders at Huhtamaki Ronsberg, “Starting the project in 2016 and today having the technology already in use for customer prints at our Ronsberg facility in Germany, Huhtamaki have proactively taken steps to guarantee the continuity of service for our customers, regardless of regulatory shifts. We take pride in being the first company to implement the new technology that not only protects the environment but also addresses occupational safety.”

Chrome III plating brings several advantages to the table, including lower emissions, reduced energy consumption, and the elimination of toxic chromium trioxide. Notably, this innovation also enhances workplace safety while maintaining the high quality and efficiency that Huhtamaki is known for.

Huhtamaki’s proactive adoption of Chrome III underscores its commitment to responsible practices and positions the company as the preferred partner for delivering innovative, sustainable packaging solutions that meet the evolving needs of the market.

The technology behind Chrome III plating, known as HelioChrome® NEO Technology, was developed in partnership with K. Walter in Ronsberg, Germany. This collaboration leverages K. Walter’s expertise in Plating and Process Technology alongside Huhtamaki’s proficiency in printing and converting, providing a solid foundation for the future of chrome plating in the gravure printing industry.

Huhtamaki’s Chrome III innovation represents a significant step forward in the packaging industry, offering sustainable and safe solutions that align with the shifting landscape of environmental regulations and market demands.
