JOZO and SFA Pioneer NextCycle IML Labels for Sustainable Packaging

In a collaborative effort led by SFA Packaging and JOZO, the introduction of NextCycle IMLTM labels marks a significant stride towards achieving fully recyclable and circular packaging. The packaging evolution, assessed by RecyClass, now holds a B-score, aligning with evolving industry guidelines.

JOZO’s saltshaker tubes underwent a remarkable transformation from a multicomponent structure, partially recyclable packaging to mono-material polypropylene (PP) with IML decoration, ensuring complete recyclability. This transition, designed to future-proof the packaging, garnered a B-score from RecyClass, reflecting the commitment to circularity.

The latest development involves replacing standard IML labels with NextCycle IMLTMtechnology, reinforcing the commitment to sustainability and regulatory compliance. The trials conducted in collaboration with MCC Verstraete and JOZO proved successful, meeting printing quality, processability, and, most importantly, recyclability standards.

Alexander Heinsdijk, Business Development and Marketing Manager at SFA Packaging, emphasizes, “Driven by JOZO’s visionary commitment to sustainable progress and true to our mission of delivering 100% recyclable and circular packaging solutions, we wanted to take it one step further.”

NextCycle IMLTM labels are engineered to separate from the container during the mechanical recycling process, ensuring the packaging enters the recycling stream without the label. Nico Van de Walle, Product and Circular Economy Manager Global IML at MCC, explains, “It’s the perfect balance between recyclability and shelf appeal.”

Vincent Mooij, Director of CIRCPACK by Veolia, acknowledges the importance of such innovations, stating, “Going mono-material was a giant step forward for JOZO’s salt shakers. Decorating the packaging with NextCycle IMLTM labels supports the future availability of high purity rPP.”

This collaborative effort positions JOZO and SFA as pioneers in embracing NextCycle IMLTM technology, showcasing a commitment to continuous improvement in the realm of sustainable packaging. As guidelines and requirements for recyclability evolve, this initiative stands as a testament to proactive adaptation and a dedication to minimizing environmental impact.
