Mondi develops laser-marked packaging concept for e-commerce applications

 

 

Mondi has developed a packaging concept combining a corrugated outer box with recyclable, laser-marked flexible packaging for e-commerce and bag-in-box applications. The company is working with customers and partners to assess commercial implementation in pet food, home and personal care products, and other e-commerce formats.

 

 

The concept applies artwork directly to flexible packaging during converting using laser-marking technology. This removes the need for conventional decorative printing and printing plates, enabling faster artwork changes, personalisation and shorter lead times. Mondi said the approach is intended to give customers greater flexibility when introducing products or designs and responding to changing market requirements.

 

 

The system can be adapted to several flexible packaging formats, including reels, the pre-made re/cycle StripPouch and larger re/cycle FlexiBag formats. Its design-for-recycling approach simplifies material structures and reduces decorative elements. Depending on application requirements, the packaging can also incorporate bio-based feedstocks or post-consumer recycled content.

 

 

According to Mondi’s internal Product Impact Assessment, a bio-based, laser-marked StripPouch provides significant carbon dioxide reductions compared with a conventional fossil-based, printed and laminated stand-up pouch. The company did not provide a numerical reduction in the information released. By combining corrugated and flexible packaging within one concept, Mondi is also offering customers a single-source route for complete bag-in-box solutions.

 

 

“Customers are under growing pressure to meet sustainability targets while managing increasingly complex product portfolios and changing consumer demands,” said Jens Koesters, Manager Technical Service, R&D and Innovation, Mondi Consumer Flexibles. He said the concept combines bio-based materials with greater artwork flexibility.

 

 

The concept received the German Packaging Award 2026 in the Sustainability category. The recognition concerned its potential to address sustainability and recycling requirements while improving packaging flexibility and supply-chain efficiency.
