Siegwerk Druckfarben AG & Co. KGaA and Ravenwood Packaging have formed a strategic partnership to promote the use of sustainable linerless labeling solutions within the packaging sector.
The collaboration centers on Siegwerk’s development of two BPA-free release varnishes, which have been officially approved for use with Ravenwood’s linerless labeling systems. These varnishes meet the regulatory requirements of the Nestlé Guidance, as well as the Swiss and German Ink Ordinances, making them suitable for Nutrition, Pharma, and Hygiene (NPH) applications.
Linerless labels are an alternative to traditional pressure-sensitive labels and do not use a silicone-coated release liner. This eliminates liner waste, reduces material use, and improves sustainability across the labeling process. The technology also offers logistical advantages such as higher label yield per roll and reduced transportation and storage demands.
According to Siegwerk, the release varnishes comply with the German Ink Ordinances, which set out toxicological and migration standards for inks used in food packaging. This alignment supports regulatory compliance and facilitates market access across jurisdictions focused on food safety.
“We are excited to collaborate with Ravenwood to bring high-performance, sustainable solutions to the market,” said Guido Lander, Vice President Business Unit Narrow Web EMEA at Siegwerk.
Dan Coe, Director at Ravenwood, added, “We see this as a significant step forward in enabling circular packaging solutions. Siegwerk’s expertise in coatings perfectly complements Ravenwood’s linerless technology.”
The two companies plan a joint presentation at the upcoming LabelExpo, where they will demonstrate the benefits of their integrated linerless labeling systems and explore further opportunities for co-development in sustainable packaging applications.
