Smurfit Kappa Expands into North Africa with State-of-the-Art Plant in Morocco

Smurfit Kappa, a leading provider of packaging solutions, has celebrated the inauguration of its new integrated corrugated plant in Rabat, marking the company’s first venture into North Africa. The strategic move comes after Smurfit Kappa invested approximately €4.7 billion over the past five years to support its customers and capitalize on long-term growth drivers.

The decision to establish a presence in Morocco is driven by the country’s promising prospects, with the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) forecasting a growth rate of 3.5% in 2023 and 3.7% in 2024. Moreover, Morocco’s strategic location positions Smurfit Kappa to serve not only the local market but also broader regions across Africa.

With an investment of over €35 million, the newly built 25,000 m2 facility exemplifies Smurfit Kappa’s commitment to expansion and job creation. The plant, which was completed within an impressive seven-month timeframe, is expected to provide employment for 400 direct and indirect workers. Catering to a diverse range of sectors including industrial, agricultural, FMCG, automotive, pharma, and ceramics, the facility will serve domestic Moroccan businesses as well as global companies. Notably, it boasts the latest Experience Centres, joining a network of over 30 centers worldwide, aimed at showcasing cutting-edge innovations in packaging solutions.

An essential aspect of the plant’s operations is its commitment to sustainability. Nearly 1,500 solar panels have been installed to power the facility, making it the first packaging plant in Morocco to be powered by green energy. This sustainable approach is set to save 55% of electricity consumption and reduce CO2 emissions by 900 tonnes per year. Furthermore, the plant incorporates a state-of-the-art purification and water treatment system, effectively reducing water consumption by 50%.

Commenting on the momentous occasion, Tony Smurfit, Group CEO of Smurfit Kappa, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “Our first corrugated operation in North Africa is an exciting step for Smurfit Kappa, and we’re delighted to unveil our state-of-the-art Moroccan facility. We continue to innovate and provide our customers with superior products in a sustainable manner. By combining our global scale and expertise with the exceptional knowledge of our local team, we are committed to delivering the best service to our customers. Morocco’s strategic location complements our operations in Europe and further expands our global footprint, providing us with a competitive advantage.”

With the inauguration of its new plant in Rabat, Smurfit Kappa reinforces its position as a global packaging leader while embracing the potential of the thriving Moroccan market. The company’s investment in sustainable technology and commitment to job creation reflects its dedication to delivering innovative packaging solutions that prioritize both the environment and customer satisfaction.
