In a move to bolster its sustainable packaging offerings, Sonoco has introduced two new cold seal structures to its EnviroFlex® Paper product line, both of which have received How2Recycle® “widely recyclable” pre-qualification. EnviroFlex Paper Ultimate (ULT) 1.0 CS and Advanced (ADV) 4.0 CS mark a significant milestone as the first cold seal paper packaging solutions to be curbside recyclable, aligning with Sonoco’s commitment to providing innovative and sustainable packaging solutions in a competitive market.
The ULT line of paper-based packaging boasts high oxygen, moisture, and grease barrier properties, making it particularly suitable for moisture-sensitive applications like pet treats and products containing nuts. On the other hand, the ADV line offers optimal performance for medium-level oxygen and moisture barrier applications, such as confections and powdered products. By introducing curbside recyclable, cold seal packaging to the EnviroFlex Paper range, Sonoco is not only promoting sustainability but also ensuring exceptional protection for heat-sensitive goods like chocolate confectionery products. Importantly, Sonoco has taken steps to ensure that the EnviroFlex Paper line is free from chemicals of concern, including PFAS and PVDC, underscoring its commitment to safety and non-toxic materials in convenient packaging formats.
Laura Buen Abad, Senior Director of Technology and Marketing, emphasized the importance of clean separation during the paper recycling process, stating, “Non-fiber components may cause disruption during the paper-making process and impact the quality of recycled paper. Through partnering with our suppliers and leveraging our internal screening capabilities to test fiber repulping and recycling, our team has developed cold seal paper-based structures that allow for the clean separation of cold seal and paper fibers and result in excellent paper quality after the standard paper recycling process. This was recently confirmed through third-party testing.”
How2Recycle® represents the industry’s first standardized labeling system that enables companies to accurately assess and communicate the recyclability of their packaging. This on-pack labeling system was designed to provide clear and consistent disposal information for consumers in the United States and Canada.
