Starbucks Replaces Plastic-Lined Cups with Fibre-Based Innovation

Starbucks partners with Transcend Packaging, Qwarzo®, and Metsä Board to introduce fibre-based hot cups and lids, replacing plastic linings and improving recyclability.

Starbucks has announced the phased launch of its redesigned hot takeaway cups across ten European countries. The updated cup replaces the traditional plastic lining with a mineral-based coating, and the plastic lid with a fibre alternative. Both components are home compostable and widely recyclable.

Developed in collaboration with Transcend Packaging, Qwarzo®, and Metsä Board, the cup was designed and manufactured in Wales, using wood fibre from Northern Europe and coating technology from Brescia, Italy. Starbucks stores in Germany, France, Italy, Sweden, Switzerland, Austria, Spain, Portugal, and Hungary are among the first to offer the new solution, with the UK and Ireland to follow later in the year.

Duncan Moir, President, Starbucks EMEA, said:
“Our hot cup solution is the first introduction of this emerging technology applied to a coffee cup at scale. I am really proud of the team that has worked to develop this innovative solution.”

Vincent Mooij, Director at Circpack by Veolia, added:
“Removing the plastic lining supports real progress in reducing plastic waste while improving material recovery.”

Lorenzo Angelucci, CEO, Transcend Packaging, noted:
“Starbucks’ commitment allows us to demonstrate the transformative potential of this solution by removing plastic linings and switching to fibre lids.”

Sander Defruyt of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation commented:
“This shows how industry can drive change by designing recyclable and compostable packaging.”

The initiative aligns with evolving EU and UK regulations and complements Starbucks’ ongoing reusable cup incentives and in-store ceramic options. The company says it will continue testing packaging innovations across markets to meet regulatory and environmental needs.
