
UFlex Limited has secured an Indian patent for a reclosable flexible packaging solution developed for large-format bags, combining tamper detection, enhanced barrier protection and secure reclosure within a single packaging structure. The patent, granted for a period of 20 years from the date of filing, covers the invention titled “A Reclosable Flexible Package with Enhanced Barrier Protection.” The announcement was made on July 16 from Noida, India.
The patented packaging has been designed for applications where products are opened and resealed multiple times before being fully consumed. According to the company, it is suitable for products such as pet food, coffee, protein supplements, flour, pharmaceutical ingredients, fertilisers, specialty chemicals and other industrial products that require protection from moisture, oxygen and contaminants during storage, transportation and repeated handling.
Unlike conventional reclosable flexible packaging, the patented design integrates three functions—secure reclosure, tamper detection and enhanced barrier protection—into a single package. This enables the contents to remain protected before first use while continuing to safeguard the remaining product after the pack has been opened and resealed multiple times.
A key feature of the design is a specially engineered protective thin layer positioned beneath the zipper assembly. Even if the zipper is opened, the product cannot be accessed without tearing the thin layer, providing a visible indication of tampering. Once the protective layer has been removed, the zipper allows the package to be securely reclosed, while the integrated barrier structure continues protecting the remaining contents from moisture, gases and other environmental contaminants.
The company noted that the solution addresses the needs of products stored over extended periods after opening. Examples include large packs of pet food or protein powder that may be opened and resealed several times over weeks, where both product integrity and evidence of first opening are important to brand owners, retailers, wholesalers and consumers. By combining tamper evidence, barrier protection and resealability, the design aims to protect product quality throughout its lifecycle.
Commenting on the development, Jeevaraj Gopal Pillai, President – Flexible Packaging and New Product Development, UFlex Limited, said: “As products are increasingly being sold in large-format packs, packaging must do much more than simply contain the product. It must protect product integrity throughout its lifecycle while giving consumers confidence that the packaging is secure and has not been opened before purchase.”
He added that the innovation is particularly relevant for products susceptible to package tampering, product substitution and counterfeiting. According to the company, the package’s barrier properties can also be tailored to suit different food, pharmaceutical, chemical and industrial applications while eliminating the need for additional sealing mechanisms.
