Coveris announces thermoformed flatbread packaging for retailers to replace non-recyclable formats

Coveris has announced  the  launch of PolyFlex Thermoform, developed with Signature Flatbreads and Al’Fez for flatbreads sold through UK and EU retailers, to replace non-recyclable thermoformed food packaging for use in bakery applications.

The packaging has initially been introduced across three Al’Fez flatbread varieties, including Turkish-Style Flame Baked Mini Flatbreads. Signature Flatbreads is a UK flatbread manufacturer, while Al’Fez offers foods inspired by North African and Middle Eastern cuisines.

PolyFlex Thermoform uses a nylon-free polyolefin structure. Its lidding film combines polyethylene and polypropylene, while the base web consists of monomaterial polyethylene. Coveris describes the format as recycle-ready and says it is currently recyclable through soft plastic collection points at major UK retailers.

Development and validation were supported by the company’s Film and Food Science Labs in Winsford and Gainsborough, UK. According to Coveris, the material was engineered to provide equivalent or improved performance compared with existing structures, while maintaining product quality and operating consistently on existing packing lines.

The packaging achieved a validated 12-week shelf life. Coveris also reports heat and puncture resistance, effective barrier properties and optical clarity for product visibility. The printed design features Al’Fez branding and serving imagery. Mark Robinson, UK Flexibles Technical Director at Coveris, said: “We have worked collaboratively with Signature Flatbreads to ensure PolyFlex Thermoform delivers across every requirement”.

Coveris says development took account of the UK’s Simpler Recycling initiative and supports UK packaging Extended Producer Responsibility and EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation requirements.
