Coveris unveils new recyclable MonoFlex Thermoform packaging

Coveris’ MonoFlex Thermoform films are developed from high performance monomaterials.

Coveris, a leading packaging solutions provider, has unveiled a groundbreaking advancement in thermoforming film packaging—MonoFlex Thermoform. This recyclable solution offers a sustainable alternative to the non-recyclable materials typically used in the food packaging sector.

Developed from high-performance monomaterials, MonoFlex Thermoform marks a shift from non-recyclable, mixed-material thermoforming substrates, contributing to a substantial reduction in carbon footprint. Aligned with Coveris’ sustainability strategy, No Waste, the new solution is crafted from polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP), ensuring a nylon-free (PA) composition.

Manufactured in Coveris plants in Germany and the United Kingdom, MonoFlex Thermoform can be produced from single substrate co-extruded or laminated films, depending on the specific product application and print requirements. With advanced EVOH barrier properties, the solution ensures product protection, shelf-life, and robust puncture resistance.

Coveris CEO, Christian Kolarik, highlighted the significance of MonoFlex Thermoform, stating, “The launch of this material enables a significant amount of plastic packaging to be captured through recycling processes, achieving environmental benefits, including carbon footprint reduction and the redirection of materials away from landfill.”

Suitable for various applications in the bakery, meat, fish, poultry, and dairy sectors, MonoFlex Thermoform maintains packing speeds comparable to alternative substrates, making the transition seamless. The product is available in fully unprinted or printed top film options, featuring conventional and HD flexographic or rotogravure prints, along with finishing options like matt, gloss, and tactile lacquer for enhanced consumer appeal and on-shelf presentation.

Coveris’ Film Science Lab expertise and Pack Innovation Centre testing capabilities played a pivotal role in the innovation process, ensuring the films’ formulations were optimized for performance and barrier features. MonoFlex Thermoform adds to Coveris’ MonoFlex range of monomaterial films designed for recyclability, aligning with their overarching vision of No Waste.
