DS Smith and BWT develop fibre-based transport box for MACH water filters

The corrugated transport box is designed to protect BWT MACH water filters and accessories through the supply chain.

DS Smith and BWT (Best Water Technology) have developed a fibre-based transport box for BWT’s MACH water filters and accessories, with the packaging now being manufactured in two versions for use in Austria.

Announced in London on 7 July 2026, the solution is designed for two types of MACH water filters, described by BWT as next-generation automatic backwash filters for the protection of domestic water pipes. The pack has been developed to improve product protection, material use, handling and transport efficiency across the supply chain.

The design uses a double-wall corrugated board structure to provide rigidity and strength while reducing material use and empty space. A triangular corrugated insert forms a flexible compartment for accessories and separates sensitive components inside the pack. The insert also raises the filters from the base of the box to help protect them from shock and impacts during handling and transport.

According to DS Smith, the design can be integrated into BWT’s existing packaging lines and requires only a single converting machine after corrugated production. The natural brown corrugated board, combined with white flexographic printing, provides space for branding and product information.

Andreas Koch, Cluster Design & Innovation Manager, DS Smith Austria, said the companies used DS Smith’s Circular Design Metrics tools to measure the pack’s sustainability performance across eight indicators, including material use and recyclability.

Andreas Weißenbacher, CEO, BWT Austria, said the MACH filters combine Rotary Impulse Technology with a more sustainable production approach. He said reducing plastic components in product packaging supports resource conservation, while the streamlined production setup improves cost and production efficiency.

The transport box won a WorldStar Global Packaging Award in the Household category in 2026.
