Dubai Municipality launches initiative to recycle 3 million plastic packaging units

Dubai Municipality’s recycling initiative aims to tackle plastic waste.

Dubai Municipality has embarked on a forward-thinking initiative aimed at collecting and recycling 3 million plastic packaging units, equivalent to 60 tons of PET plastic, in the emirate. PET plastic is commonly used in water bottles, soft drink containers, and food packaging due to its durability, transparency, and lightweight properties.

H.E. Dawoud Al Hajri, Director General of Dubai Municipality, emphasized the importance of the initiative in promoting community accountability and minimizing the carbon footprint, stating, “This initiative aligns with our commitment to reduce waste impact and promote recycling, in line with national environmental targets and the Year of Sustainability in the UAE.”

The initiative also involves recycling plastic bottles to manufacture uniforms for municipal sanitation workers, making Dubai Municipality the first municipality in the world to utilize recycled materials for this purpose. Al Hajri highlighted the initiative’s role in bolstering sustainability and diminishing the carbon footprint, with an aim to offset the release of 102 tons of carbon dioxide gas.

In addition to the recycling initiative, Dubai Municipality has implemented various measures to promote effective waste management, including distributing smart plastic packaging containers to educational institutions and setting up collection centers for recyclable materials in populated areas. Specialized plastic packaging containers have also been installed at popular locations like beaches and public facilities such as Dubai Frame and Safari Park to encourage participation.

The initiative underscores Dubai Municipality’s commitment to promoting waste management and sustainability, encouraging both government and private sectors to increase the ratio and quality of recycled materials while promoting concepts like circular economy and waste recycling.
