GAIA BioMaterials has received final confirmation of its European patent for PLA-free film extrusion materials, giving the company protection for a material platform aimed at biodegradable and compostable packaging film applications.
The patent, originally filed in 2020, covers compounds that do not rely on PLA for their properties. Instead, the materials use a blend of biodegradable and compostable polymers and minerals. According to the company, compounds based on the patent are already being used in carrier bags, fruit and vegetable bags, waste bags and medical aprons, with further applications under development or consideration.
The development is relevant to flexible packaging and disposable film manufacturers looking at alternatives to conventional plastic materials. It also comes as producers in the GCC are adapting to restrictions on single-use plastic products and higher raw material costs linked to global market conditions.
Soraya Narfeldt, CEO of RA Group PLC, the exclusive distributor of GAIA BioMaterials in the GCC, said the patent confirmation is significant for regional manufacturers.
“For the GCC, the timing of this patent confirmation could not be better. Single-use plastic restrictions are already being implemented across the region, while the cost of conventional plastic raw materials has risen sharply on the back of global oil prices. For manufacturers looking for alternatives, GAIA’s biodegradable compounds are proven, protected, and in many cases now cost-competitive with the materials they replace,” she said.
The packaging innovation lies in the material structure. By removing dependence on PLA, GAIA is positioning the patented compounds for film applications where manufacturers require processability, certification and end-use performance while meeting sustainability requirements.
“We are very pleased with the final confirmation for this patent,” said Peter Stenström, CEO at GAIA. “I know the effort that has gone into it; it reflects the people in our R&D department, and the work they are capable of.”
Ali Jalliko, Sales Manager at RA Group PLC, said manufacturers and procurement teams are seeking compliant alternatives that can be introduced without affecting product performance, supply reliability or certification requirements.
The patent gives GAIA and RA Group PLC an intellectual property-protected material option for GCC customers evaluating biodegradable and compostable packaging films.
