Technovaa breaks ground on Abu Dhabi hub

By June, Technovaa Packaging Industries aims to be ready to manufacture at a 25,000m2 plant at the Khalifa Industrial Zone Abu Dhabi (Kizad), the firm’s president, Hassan Darvesh Darvesh told Packaging MEA.

At the company’s new site – where ground was officially broken on 7 October – Technovaa will target both exports and rising local demand, he said.

Technovaa aims to be ready to manufacture at a new base in Kizad by mid-2015.

“Sixty percent of product will be for export and, as the population in the Middle East grows, we will aim to get a better share of the local markets,” said Darvesh.

Technovaa already has manufacturing facilities across the Middle East, Asia, Europe and Africa. The paper products and plastic film producer forms part of the Darvesh group, which traces its activities back to 1909.

At Kizad, the film is making a AED250m ($68m) investment, which Darvish describes as “symbolic of the confidence we have in the UAE economy”.

Technovaa Packaging Industries was set up in 1997 in Dubai and aims to continue its operations there and at Ras Al Khor after its new plant is operational. In its new base the firm aims to manufacture a broad range of products, continuing its focus on “biodegradable and recycling technology”, said Darvesh.

The company’s portfolio includes stretch wrap film, CPP film, PVC-free PE cling film for food packaging, acrylics and masking adhesive tape, lamination films for food packaging, paper cores, and bags – both printed and plain – for chicken, meat and bread.

Technovaa’s specialised products include UV-stabilised shrink film and shrink hood film as well as UV-based stretch wrap film and coloured stretch films.

With a built-up area of 20,000m2, the new plant has been designed to take advantage of Kizad’s role as a manufacturing, logistics and trade, plus its “better utility coasts and competitively priced infrastructure solutions”, added Darvesh.
