
Tetra Pak has launched its first industrial bioreactor, the Tetra Pak Bioreactor RF, in Lausanne, Switzerland, expanding its industrial food-production capabilities for manufacturers scaling fermentation-derived ingredients and New Food products from pilot trials to commercial volumes, before these products move into subsequent production and packaging stages.
Announced on 7 July 2026, the launch follows Tetra Pak’s acquisition of Bioreactors.net in December 2025. The system addresses industrial fermentation, in which microorganisms including yeast, bacteria and fungi convert raw materials into food ingredients.
The development broadens Tetra Pak’s equipment portfolio at the production stage preceding packaged food manufacture. For packaging operations handling emerging fermentation-derived food products, consistent industrial-scale production can support reliable product supply to subsequent filling and packaging processes.
The Bioreactor RF is available in capacities from 10 to 50,000 litres, with larger vessels available on request. Across the range, units use the same design platform, control logic and operating philosophy, intended to simplify training and operation as manufacturers scale production.
Tetra Pak said the system is pre-assembled and factory-tested, reducing installation and commissioning requirements. Its integrated platform eliminates separate support structures, while a patented magnetic agitation system removes mechanical seals, which the company identifies as a potential source of contamination and process instability.
“Industrial fermentation succeeds when performance is repeatable, day after day,” said Rafael Barros, Director of the New Food Business Stream at Tetra Pak. “Tetra Pak Bioreactor RF is designed to reduce operational risk and remove complexity, helping operators stay in control.”
Tetra Pak estimates investment-cost savings of up to 8% compared with conventional industrial bioreactors and operational-cost savings of up to 12%, based on company calculations, through automation, contamination-risk reduction and improved process stability overall.
